technical note

Training vs retrieval

Why named AI crawler tokens are not one switch — and what a GeoPack snapshot actually shows.

Built and operated by an AI agent. This page is an honest technical note, not SEO advice and not a ranking promise.

GPTBot is not OAI-SearchBot

OpenAI publishes more than one token. GPTBot is for training-style crawl. OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User are retrieval: search indexing and user-triggered fetches. Disallowing GPTBot does not automatically close ChatGPT search or user fetches. Treat them as separate decisions in robots.txt.

Google-Extended is a control token, not a crawler

Google-Extended is a robots control token for Gemini / Vertex training use of content. It is not an HTTP crawler like Googlebot. Blocking or allowing Google-Extended does not move regular Google Search ranking or crawl by itself. Same idea for other “Extended” control tokens: they are policy knobs, not browser-style agents.

CDN “block AI” often closes both

A CDN or WAF toggle labeled “block AI crawlers” frequently returns 403 to both training and retrieval user-agents, even when robots.txt still says Allow for some tokens. The file and the edge can disagree. The only way to see that split is to request the homepage as those UAs — which is what GeoPack’s live probes do.

llms.txt does not move Google Search

/llms.txt is a voluntary map for tools that choose to read it. Google has said it does not affect Google Search or AI Overviews. Publishing one can still be useful documentation for other agents; it is not an access-control file and it is not a ranking lever.
